Staging Tip : Adding Greenery

Staging your home to look it’s best is important when selling, especially when you want to leave a lasting impression on buyers. One of my go-to tips for all Sellers is: Add a Little Greenery. Ever wonder why all your favorite designers add pops of florals or greenery before the big show-case or photography takes place? There’s a very simple answer - it’s appealing to the viewer’s eye. And as a seller, shouldn’t we all want to appeal to the buyer’s eye?

Adding greenery doesn’t have to be expensive. It doesn’t have to be a task. And you don’t have to be Martha Stewart. We aren’t talking plant’s in every room, top to bottom. Just simple little notes here and there. Don’t have a green thumb? Need not worry. There are plenty of plants that are virtually kill-proof, need little sun or need little water. There are also plants that wont affect those with allergies and asthma.

EASY INDOOR PLANTS

Looking for hardy indoor plants? You know, the ones that don’t require much attention other than a quick water once or twice a week? These are some of our favorites (and available at most nurseries/hardware stores):

Ficus Tree, Pathos Plant, Snake Plant, Spider Plant, Peace Lily, Rubber Plant, Cast Iron Plant, Philadendron, Fiddle Leaf Fig Tree, ZZ Plant, Ponytail Palm, Prayer Plant, Dragon Tree, Heart-shaped Philadendron, English Ivy.

other great plants: aloe plant, swiss cheese plant, banana leaf tree, monstera leaf plant

STYLING WITH BRANCHES

In a pinch, trying to cut costs, or looking to bring focus to ceiling heights? Snip outdoor branches from attractive trees & bushes. We aren’t talking pecan or cedar trees, but those that blossom, have interesting shapes (olive tree, monstera, elephant ears), or even smell nice (eucalyptus/rosemary).

BE CREATIVE WITH YOUR POTS

Source materials from around the home such as baskets, over-sized vases, and metal buckets. Own pots but they’re in rough shape? Give them a quick spray paint.

DON’T FORGET ABOUT EXTERIOR PLANTS

The first sight all buyers see is your front entry, so shouldn’t you dress it up a little? And what about the yard space? That certainly deserves a little TLC, too. You can keep it simple, but still be impactful. This includes making sure your yard is mowed, weeded, & edged. We want our buyers focusing on the items that matter, not the over-grown grass at their ankles. Need some tips? We’re happy to help!

SOME HOME PLANT TIPS:

  • Always research your plants, whether it’s an indoor or outdoor plant. Some grow better in the South versus Northern United States. Some prefer indirect sun and others love to bathe in it.

  • Dress up your counters. This includes kitchen areas, as well as bathroom areas (if there’s a window).

  • Make sure to water accurately and regularly (based on your research). Setting up a schedule, alarm on your phone, or sticking to watering the same day each week makes it much simpler.

  • Open blinds & curtains during the day to let natural light in.

  • Keep them pruned. The best way to promote growth is to prune your plants. Cut off dead leaves, dead flowers, trim them back as needed, etc.

  • Don’t skimp on the fertilizer. It not only promotes healthy growth, but faster growth. Visit with your local garden shop as fertilizers can be very plant specific. Interested in food waste? Consider building your own compost to create natural fertilizer for your plants.

  • Stability is key. Plants, much like people, thrive on consistency. Try to keep them in the same location and under the same temperatures, as they quickly adjust to their environment.

  • Dust your indoor plant leaves. Collection of dust on leaves prevent the plant from soaking in sunlight. Give them a quick rub with a damp wash cloth every so often and your plant will thank you, especially those with large green leaves (i.e. the fiddle fig).

Note: This post in no way insinuates that Seller’s must purchase indoor plants in order to have a successful selling experience. All opinions are our own - we simply find greenery to be impactful in photos and showings. We are always here for any plant advice you might need. And if we can’t answer the question, we’re happy to direct you to a professional who can.
