Improving Your Curb Appeal

The yard and entrance to your home is a buyer's first glimpse and serves as a snap shot of what's to come. Creating good curb appeal is a sure-fire way to ensure potential buyers are excited to step foot into your abode. It doesn’t have to be overly expensive and should be something you feel you’re capable of continuing to maintain.

Not sure where to start? We're always happy to provide feedback. Here are our favorite ways to improve curb appeal:

  1. Elevate the entry by adding an inviting welcome mat or green wreath to the front door. Toss a cozy pillow & blanket on a nearby chair or swing.

  2. Consider symmetry as it’s pleasing to the eye. Update your porch with matching light sconces or pots with fresh flowers flanking the door or entry steps. If you’ve got a large porch, hang some planters with ferns, potato vine or bright flowers.

  3. Update house numbers and check to make sure the mailbox is in nice condition.

  4. Utilize furniture smartly. Too much looks like clutter, while too little looks scarce. Make certain it’s all clean and in good condition. Our favorite shops for outdoor furniture include: Target, Home Goods, & West Elm Outlet.

  5. Hide unsightly items. Find a space for trashcans. Purchase a hose rack to keep it organized. Clean up children’s toys and find a space to keep them organized.

  6. Pressure wash sidewalks, fences, porches, and pathways if possible.

7. Give the exterior a fresh coat of paint or touch up spots as needed.

8. Clean dirt and debris from gutters.

9. Make sure all exterior windows shine. Remove cobwebs from porch awnings and windows.

10. Hit your grass with fertilizer to add a punch of green to the yard.

11. Keep the lawn freshly mowed. Ensure there’s a clear path to the entries of your home.

12. Spruce up landscaping. Trim shrubs and weed your flower beds. Add seasonal flowers in pots or to your planter beds. Consider easy to care for plants like lantana, liriope, monkey grass, periwinkle, and rosemary. Add fresh mulch or river rock to your beds. Can’t afford new planters? Give your pots a quick spray paint in a crisp white or color that compliments the home.

13. Don’t forget to tend to your backyard space as well. Consider allocating spaces for particular uses, such as a dining nook or relaxing area near a fireplace or chimenea. String outdoor lights for added effect. Pressure wash your fencing, clean up toys, hide lawn and grill equipment. Tend to the yard, weeds, and beds. Add large planters near doors and seating areas to cozy up the space.
